Blog #23 | Michael Jackson did NOT do the Moonwalk First

Hey everyone! Hopefully, most of you are finished/finishing up with the 1st wave of midterms and have a bit of a reprieve for the remainder of the month. For those of you passionate about dance, as well as the club, make sure you run to be our newcomer reps at our AGM on October 26th! Now that we’ve had a few classes, I’m sure some of you might be a little bit overwhelmed with the amount of technique and finesse that goes into dancing. Keep at it, because there’s still the rest of the year to practice, practice, practice! Come to our guided practices, and keep asking us execs and your teachers for advice 🙂 Dance is something that’s used to communicate all around the world, and, not only for ourselves, but for our animal friends too. So, today, I’ll be introducing 10 of my favourite dancers in the animal world.
  1. Blue Damselfly Dancing is about precise, purposeful movements. Watch the male damselfly strut his stuff, but the female only responds when he’s doing it right.
  1. Peacock Spider Not all spiders are drab and strive to blend in. Comes with their own soundtrack.
  1. Pheasants You can’t really talk about dancing in the animal world without mentioning birds, our extravagant feathered friends; and few are as diversely beautiful as the pheasants.
  1. Blue Manakin Teamwork makes a difference sometimes
  1. Red Manakin Nope, Michael did not do this first.
  1. Marvelous Spatuletail Big things come in small packages. The Marvelous Spatuletail (yes, that’s its name) is a prime example of that.
  1. Birds of Paradise Few bird families can compete with the Birds of Paradise when it comes to diversity and complexity of plumage and display. There is one thing in common: they are all unique, and all spectacular.
  1. Western Grebe and Clark’s Grebe It looks funny the first time, but watch a bit more and you’ll appreciate how the dance symbolizes the mated pair’s commitment to each other.
  1. Springtail Of course, ballroom dancing is about the partnership as a whole – and that happens in the animal world too.
  1. Weedy Seadragon Sometimes, simplicity is best.
So there you have it: my list of 10 amazing dancing animals. What are you waiting for? Start dancing! Your equipment manager and wannabe-David-Attenborough, Geoffrey
