Blog #22 | Confession of a Clutterer

Woohoo! Finally settled in to my (not really mine…) new apartment. I was super excited for the move, but thank goodness it’s over. I thought the move was going to be a quick and easy. “Just toss everything into a few boxes and I’ll be good to go,” I told myself. Boy was I wrong. Clutter everywhere! I had clothes from when I was in Grade 7, my high school workbooks/notes, toys that I haven’t played with since I was 10, old books, and lots of random shi—zzle.

Why do I keep so many things? I don’t know…I guess I always thought that I may need that “thing” in the future. For the most part, I never did. Instead of bringing everything to my new place and cluttering that up, I knew it was time to let go. Things that were broken = trash bin Old school notes/homework/assignments = recycle bin Old (decent condition) clothing and toys = donation (eg. Salvation Army, Value Village, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver) Old (decent condition) books = donation (e.g. Vancouver Public Library, Richmond Public Library) Places like the Salvation Army take old, but still useable, items in and sell them. The money they make goes to charities they support. There are also other non-profit organizations that collect old, decent clothing items and give them to those who are in need. You can either go to their offices/shops and drop off the items there, or drop them off at a donation bin (those huge metal container things). I believe there are two donation bins near the Hampton Place bus stop on campus. Some organizations go around neighbourhoods to collect items too.

Got lots of old books that are collecting dust? I did. All those books went to public libraries (Vancouver and Richmond). If the books are relatively new and are still in good condition, the library will usually put it in its catalogue. So if you want to read it again, you can borrow it! If they are old books, the library will sell it and use the money earned to buy new books. It’s a Win-Win situation! What are you waiting for? It’s time to declutter! It may make things a lot easier if you ever move in the future. Good luck on your midterms! Melinda   – Bookings Rep
