Blog #9 | Canada Day and How to Enjoy Ballroom Dancing That Much More

First of all, I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend celebrating Canada’s birthday, and for those of you who were in the parade or saw it, I expect to see you at Robson Square this Friday (more on it later in this blog), which brings me to my next point… Social dancing, what does it do for you? Well, for a start, it’s a social event, so you’re with friends, or perhaps introducing a friend to the fun of social dancing! It’s also enjoying the dancing, and learning how to lead and follow while dancing with many people. This is crucial, as by dancing only with a few people, you miss out on learning how to lead or follow. You also miss out on meeting new people, which is the point of social dancing! Now, one thing that I feel will really help to improve your dancing is learning some technique. People may groan a bit about it, but without it, you’ll be very frustrated why you can’t make that turn or lead/follow that step. I’ll tell you one thing, you’ll definitely look and feel much better dancing with some technique under your belt, and your follow/lead will appreciate it too. You’ll be more confident with your dancing as well! If you’re a bit more confident, you may consider going to a competition. To watch? No! To compete!  It might not seem like the obvious thing to be doing after only learning a bit of technique, but if you’re going to watch you might as well dance. The whole point of ballroom competitions is to show off what you’ve learned, and enjoy yourself while you’re at it. That way you know what you’re comfortable with, and what you can work on to make you and your partner that much more awesome. I’ll let you in on a little hot news item: in the ballroom community, Vancouver will be taking centre stage next year.  Keep your eyes on this blog, and you’ll find out more in the following months! For those of you who missed the countless Facebook messages, Twitter posts, posters, your friends in UBC Dance Club chatting about it, and the whopping great truck on Canada Day, Robson Square is on its 2nd week this summer! There’s enough social dancing planned for you to last all the way through the summer, and new dances to learn to boot. Did you know: Robson Square started in 1979, as a way to promote social ballroom dancing in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland? Now, 34 years later, it’s still going on every summer. We even have UBC Dance Club Alumni coming back from all over the world just to meet old friends and dance the night away! Cheerio! Melvin – Gala Chair
