Blog #8 | Summer Jam Picks a la Curtis

Hey dancers! Welcome to my humble ranting about myself. If you don’t know who I am, I’m sure you’ve heard of the name Curtis Li somewhere (or that annoying kid who’s loud and obnoxious in the execs). Have you ever listened to a song that makes you feel something inside of you but can’t really put your finger on what it is? A song that transports you to somewhere else for three to four minutes but makes you craving for more? To me, that’s how I would explain why I love Country Music. I’ve spent the better part of my free time listening to music on YouTube (along with endless hours of other YouTube videos) and discovered a couple of songs that would definitely be my jam from the rest of the summer. I want to share it with you guys and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Curtis’ Summer Jam Playlist Top 5

  1. Thomas Rhett – Make Me Wanna The first time I heard this song, I immediately found myself transported to a far off place where nature surrounds you. Imagine you are sitting on a haystack in a barn house, next to a slow fire on a warm summer night. The stars are glittering so strong that makes you want to stay in that moment forever. That pretty much describes how I felt when I listen to this song. It’s one of those things that words can’t describe exactly what I want to say.
  2.
  3. Dallas Smith – Nothing But Summer Sitting in my room alone listening to this song with my earphones is the best! It lets me experience things that I really want to do during the summer without ever having to actually physically do them (yes, I am that lazy). If you need a little motivation to go do outside activities, listen to this song.
  4.
  5. Sugarland – Everyday America When I was in Hong Kong listening to this song, I really missed Canada. Believe me, HK supermarkets are nothing like Canada’s or US’. It makes me wonder what life would be like if I was born in a small town rather than a busy city. I’ve always imagined about being a small town guy where I know everyone in the neighborhood I grew up in. Watch the video, it might make more sense to what I’m trying to say.
  6.
  7. Rascal Flatts – Life is a Highway This song from the movie “Cars”, how can you not love it? To be honest, I didn’t think much about this song until I watched Cars. I had a whole new appreciation about what the message of the song is and the beauty to driving through a desert on a highway. This is such a care free song and it made me forget about any stress I had! By the way, this song could make a rad quickstep (might be a little faster than what you’re used to).
  8.
  9. Florida Georgia Line ft. Nelly – Cruise (Remix)What? Nelly’s going country??? A remix of one of my favorite songs? A more upbeat version? Still good vocals? ‘Nuff said, immediately on my list for this.
I didn’t forget about you peeps who prefer other genres of music, these are my recent non-country picks for my summer jam: Who am I kidding, here’s a couple more country songs. One day, I’ll convert you all into country song junkies… I swear, this is the last one I’m gonna talk about:
  • Chicago – Cellblock Tango This is my all-time favorite musical number. I’m a bit embarrassed to say this but I wanted to use this as an audition piece for a musical back in high school. I ended up singing some song that I barely knew the words to and got a one liner part (my character awesome by the way, just want you guys to know). It would be so cool if I could play all the different characters all at once. Too bad I wasn’t gifted with great acting/singing/dancing skills. Here is an alternate version of this song performed by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. If you have never seen/heard of Cellblock tango, I recommend you to watch this one first, because their interpretation of this musical piece is amazingly hilarious.
That’s it! That’s my lengthy rant about my choice of music for the summer. I hope you guys have a great summer filled with your favorite music! Signing off, so I can go dance in my room alone, Curtis –          Zumba Representative
