Blog #28 | End of Term, American Turkeys, and Bargain Hunting

As the term draws to an end, there are many things to reflect on. Study habits, eating habits, relationships (or lack thereof). The list goes on. Soon-to-be alumni will walk the Chan Centre stage on Thursday for their convocation ceremony, while undergraduates prepare for their latest set of exams and for the sudden wind chill of winter. What else does the end of term mean to you? Is it just another four months of your life spent memorizing facts and figures so you can someday walk the stage towards that piece of paper, or is it worthwhile, getting you one step closer to your end goal? All the reflection aside, let’s get to what’s happening this week. I’d like to wish everyone from the USA a happy, perhaps a little early (for them), Thanksgiving. While there may be deals everywhere this weekend (Black Friday, Cyber Monday), please keep in mind that you’re still spending an X amount of money on that big box appliance set thingamajig. This also applies for anyone doing online shopping; just because it’s on sale does not mean you absolutely need to buy it. Some items may also not really be on sale. As a fellow bargain hunter I encourage you to do your research when searching for the right item online or in store, and if you do decide to brave the cold, line-ups, and people (only for certain categories of items though, e.g. technology), know what you’re looking for beforehand so you can just pop in, grab what you need, pay, and leave immediately. Let the other people fight over what’s left. This weekend is a good time to get started on some quite early Christmas shopping with all the deals going on. One of my siblings has recently become a fan of Doctor Who and has requested some paraphernalia. A website that I recommend for such things is www.thinkgeek.com. They have a plethora of fantastic paraphernalia from TV shows, movies, video/computer games, and other interests like Pac Man glasses. One more thing you can do this weekend other than get some shopping done and get some turkey in your stomach, is come to our annual Holiday Ball on November 30th at 6:30pm. We’re running a Hollywood red carpet theme this year which will be a blast, and I’m super excited to get all dressed up and have some good food. Holiday Ball poster Hope to see you all there!
