Blog #17 | Finding that bowl of Porridge that is “just right”

Have you ever read the fairy tale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears?” Some of my friends have told me that if Goldilocks was real, she’d be in the running for one of the pickiest girls – like why does it take her so long to find a bowl of porridge?! Although this made me laugh, and it could be true, I like to spin it in a positive light and argue that she is trying to fill her life with things that she enjoys and also fits her personal needs, wants, and goals. If you haven’t noticed, UBC offers a huge range of involvement opportunities for students, and sometimes it’s easy to #applyforeverything. During my first year at UBC, I created a “To Do” list for myself before I graduated: do_before_graduation I’m the type of person who likes to try different things, and expand my experiences. So, kind of like Goldilocks, I have attempted to try everything I can on campus. From being a residence advisor in Totem Park, being on the Student Leadership Conference Committee, and working for AMS Services, to joining UBC REC, I’ve dug into multiple bowls of porridge. But I think the porridge that has been “just right” for me has been the UBC Dance Club. I really don’t mean this as a shameless plug, but for real, UBC Dance Club has been one of my favourite involvement pieces. I joined in first year after being attacked by the Dance Club train at Imagine Day and participating in the Free Residence Demos at Totem Park. It’s been an opportunity for me to stay in shape and meet people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Don’t get me wrong, the other groups I have joined on campus have been just as amazing, but there is something about the passion in Dance Club that has gotten me to stay for the past four years. And, I’m almost certain if you asked any previous members, they would probably tell you they enjoyed being in the club as well! So with this, I encourage you to try new things on campus, and pull a “Goldilocks.” Think about what you want to do on campus before you graduate, but also find that bowl of porridge that is just right for you. I hope that it might include the UBC Dance Club, but if it doesn’t that’s OK too! At least give it a go and don’t write it off as something you would never do. If you need more reasons to join, take a gander at our new promotional video! Also check out our FREE classes this month and really awesome events!
