Blog #15 | Comfort Zone

Why hello there! I hope that everyone who has been taking summer school did well on their finals this week. I just finished my Psyc 300A final yesterday night so I apologize for the late blog. Nevertheless, as you’ve probably noticed, these blogs are a chance for you to get to know each exec more personally. We love meeting new people and making new friends so on that note, I’m going to tell you about how I met one of my best friends, Alex Hill. Don’t worry, there’s a moral to this story so read it to the end. It was in Grade 3 and we were both in Mrs. Marsland’s class. We weren’t very close back in the day but were still “acquaintances”. One day I noticed that Alex was wearing a black long sleeve shirt from GAP (Gap was da bomb back then). It had three pink rhinestone butterflies right across the front as well. Super classy. I happened to have the exact same shirt at the time, because our parents were cool like that, so I walked towards her to try and bond over our matching shirts. Although we weren’t really good friends, I told myself it wouldn’t hurt to just talk to her. Essentially I said “Hey! I got the same shirt as you. How cool is that. Let’s go to school matching one day.” Of course she thought my idea was awesome and we decided to overachieve and wear an entire, head-to-toe, matching outfit. This meant wearing our long sleeved GAP shirts with black pants. Hahha we had a great, creative sense of style back then… So we came to school in our matching outfits, sat at the front of the class, and hoped that someone would notice that we looked the same. No one actually did, which in retrospect might have been a good thing, but that was essentially how we met.
I like to think that we looked similar to Audrey Hepburn over here, but I’m about 95% sure we didn’t…
We didn’t really talk much afterwards since she had her friends and I had mine. That was, until the eighth grade! Dun dun DUHHHH. It was the first day of school and I was walking home by myself when I noticed that Alex was walking ahead of me. In all honestly, didn’t want to be a loner and walk home alone so I decided to call out to Alex and walk home together. Mind you we hadn’t talked in around five years so things could have ended super awkwardly. However, I’m glad I took that chance because for the rest of our high school years we walked home together and became awesome friends. Just for the heck of it, I did a mini interview with Alex to see what her side of the story was. Heads up: sorry if the video is not YouTube quality. I learned how to edit video right after my exam. Yup so that was my friend Alex! Isn’t she a charmer 😀  So here is where I convince you to join dance club. Alex and I became great friends because we both stepped out of our usual friend bubble to meet new people. Our friendship might have never blossomed if I had shied away from the possibility of awkward experiences, so neither should you! Joining dance club does not only teach you how to dance wonderfully, but it gives you an opportunity to meet new people and build new relationships in the process. Step out of your comfort zone and get to know some awesome people!

So here are the takeaways from this blog/vlog:

  1. Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and meet some new people!
  2. GAP was cool back then so no one judge us…
As mentioned before, come by new week for a new blog and be sure to check it out the past blogs as well. It was great to meet you all through the internet and I’ll be expecting some more hellos in the future. Byes! Kaitlyn Jung –        Marketing Director
